Over the top: Nothing to lose situation worked for India

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

The camera angle that captured the helplessness on the faces of Kumar Sangakkara, Lasith Malinga and skipper Mahela Jayawardene almost simultaneously during India’s unbelievable chase against Sri Lanka at Hobart epitomized the story of the match. Sri Lanka, after posting a massive total courtesy tons from Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan, and knowing that India had to chase down the target inside 40 overs, must have believed that they would easily be through to the finals. They had every right to believe so.

Over the top: Pak must have separate Test & ODI squads

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Following the setback in the one-day series, Pakistan lost out to England in the T20 series as well. Despite Pakistan pulling off a victory in one of the matches, England were clearly the superior side. Pakistan’s failings in both the T20s and ODIs, which was almost the same as the Test side indicate that the Asian side must ponder upon having separate teams, at least for Tests and ODIs. Also, like every other team, they must look out for some big-hitting T20 specialists and bowlers capable of tying down the opposition.

Over the top: Controversy apart, India were appalling again

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Following yet another loss in the tri-series, India’s chances of making it to the finals have all but disappeared. Even though tactically they can still make it, they would have to play out of their skins to achieve that, and also hope that a few other factors go in their favour.

Over the top: India, take a cue from Ponting axe

Friday, February 24th, 2012

In a way, the India-Australia-Sri Lanka tri-series has been about the struggles of the veterans, more so from India and Australia. Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, two of the all-time greats of the game, have struggled in a manner they rarely have in the past. And, with their age being in the late 30, there is little chance and time for them to return to their best, at least in the shorter format of the game that demands a lot more agility. Intriguingly, both team managements have reacted to the situation in diverse ways. While Australia, as expected, dropped Ponting from the squad, the Indians (also as expected) continue to persist with Tendulkar despite his continuous failures. The Indian management ought to take a cue from the Aussie selectors, and do what is in the best interest of the team. Or still better, Tendulkar himself should call it quits from the shorter format, and ease the pressure on the selectors and team management.

Over the top: Pakistan were outplayed by clinical England

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

What a reversal of fortune it was for Pakistan. The team which could do nothing wrong in the Test series found itself on the other end of the rope in the one-dayers, as England completely outdid them to seal a whitewash. It will remain intriguing how a side’s fortunes with the same players can be so contrasting in two different formats of the game. But then, that’s the beauty of cricket; each format provides its own challenges, and it’s upto the team to adapt. England did that brilliantly while Pakistan failed miserably in their endeavour to translate Test success into some more wins in the one-dayers.

Over the top: Nothing wrong with Sehwag, Gambhir speaking their minds

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

A lot is being written about the apparent lack of communication in the Indian team ever since Virender Sehwag revealed that he was unaware of skipper M S Dhoni calling the seniors ‘slow’. A section of the media is in fact projecting it as a case of the Indian team being ‘split wide open’, which is taking things a bit too far. Yes, after the Adelaide win over Australia the other opener Gautam Gambhir too made a statement stating that game should have been finished in the 48th over and should not have gone into the final over. There were reports thentoo of rift in the Indian team. All this, however, is of little consequence when it comes to the actual battle, which is played on the field. Hence, too much shouldn’t be looked into and written about the press-player interaction.

Over the top: Australia’s comeback sets up tri-series nicely

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Australia’s thumping win over India meant that they made it back to the top of the points table, reducing the damage afflicted by the two previous losses. From a purely cricketing perspective though what it has done is set up the tri-series nicely, with all three teams now having a decent chance of making it to the finals of the tournament. Picture this: Australia have gained 14 points from five games, with three wins and two losses; India have achieved 10 from the same number of matches, with two victories, two defeats and the tie against Sri Lanka. Speaking of the Lankans, they have clawed back well into the tournament after a disappointing start. After losing their opening two encounters, they did well to hold India to a tie before going on to overpower the Aussies. Presently, they have managed to garner seven points for more matches, and would be high on confidence going into their next encounter, against the Indians, who themselves would be looking to improve on their shabby showing against the Aussies at the Gabba, Brisbane. In short, neither team can claim to have been the dominant one in the tri-series so far. Australia may be ahead on points for now, but they can’t lay claim to being the best yet.

Over the top: Splendid Cook, the key to English revival

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

It takes a lot of character to recover from a pasting of the kind England received in the three-match Test series against Pakistan. And England showed plenty of it en route to winning the first three matches of the one-day series against the same opposition that looked impregnable in the longer format, in the process also clinching the four-match series handsomely. If there was one man who was chiefly responsible for this near unimaginable turnaround, it was English ODI skipper Alastair Cook.

Over the top: Aussies were completely ragged against Lanka

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

One could see it coming. Sri Lanka had come perilously close to winning against Australia, and almost pulled off a tight win against India. On both occasions, the opposition somehow managed to hang on — Australia for a victory and India for a tie. However, on Friday at Sydney, the tide finally turned. Sri Lanka put in a completely ruthless performance with both bat and ball as well as in the field as the Aussies were embarrassingly crushed on the day Ricky Ponting returned to lead the side in the absence of their injured regular skipper Michael Clarke. It did not help that Ponting continued to struggle for runs in the 50-over format. He registered his fourth consecutive score of under 10. Except for the in-form David Hussey no one in the Aussie line-up got a decent score, as a result of which the home side ended up with a below-par score. All credit to Sri Lanka though for the manner in which they rolled over the Aussies.

Over the top: Better exposure the only way forward for Zimbabwe

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

There was little surprising about Zimbabwe’s annihilation by the Black Caps in all three formats of the game. However, what it brought to the fore was the wide gap that exists even between Zimbabwe and other lowly-ranked Test teams. New Zealand, we all know, aren’t among the better teams in Test cricket currently. In fact, they have been poor ever since the likes of Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle and Chris Cairns called it quits. It has only been veteran Daniel Vettori who has kept the flag afloat for the Kiwis and, to an extent, Ross Taylor. The rest have been merely minnow-bashers, as evident from this series. Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill, whose averages had taken severe beatings following failures against the bigger sides, took the opportunity to balance out things, smashing the hapless Zimbabweans bowlers to all parts of the ground. Even the struggling Chris Martin roared back to form against the harmless batsmen from the minnow nation. In addition, the home side also uncovered a couple of men to watch out for in the future whose respond to the names of Rob Nicol and Andrew Elli.
