USA’s contribution crucial towards global development of cricket

Friday, April 13th, 2012

The International Cricket Council (ICC) may have suspended its grants to the USA Cricket Association (USACA), pulling them up for poor governance. Also, there are no two opinions about the fact that the functioning of the cricketing association needs an overhaul, a thoroughly professional one at that, what with Ram Varadarajan, one of the presidential candidates for USACA, taking the association to court. However, there is no denying the fact that if cricket wants to be become a globally popular game in the future, a significant contribution will have to come from the USA.

Indo-Pak cricket can revitalise interest in sport

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent suggestion that bilateral cricketing ties between India and Pakistan should resume was backed to an extent by BCCI vice president and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, who commented that we all should be optimistic about resumption about Indo-Pak ties. While both statements augur well for the future of Indo-Pak ties, there are still major hurdles to cross.

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Pakistan’s most successful domestic T20 team Sialkot Stallions recently defended their Super Eight T20 Cup crown, defeating Karachi Dolphins rather comfortably in the final. Earlier, they won five consecutive T20 cups between 2005-6 and 2009-10. This run even featured a streak of 25 unbeaten games in a row, which in itself is a world record for a noted T20 championship.

Over the top: A performance for Bangladesh to savour

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Not often does it happen that a losing team walks away with more plaudits than the winners. However, in Bangladesh’s case, they were heroes despite not being able to pull off a historic heist in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan. As aptly predicted by this writer in the piece of March 11 (Pakis have decent chance of winning Asia Cup), Misbah-ul-Haq’s men sealed victory following a nail-biting finish. However, the writer was totally off the mark in anticipating that Bangladesh had no chance at all. All credit to the hosts for proving the Pinch Hitter wrong. Mushfiqur Rahim’s men fought till the end like true tigers, and even though they could not cross over the victory line, they did enough to earn the respect of the cricketing world.

Over the top: No praise too high for lion-hearted Lanka

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

And so, the tri-series Down Under heads into the third final. The closely fought battles between Australia and Sri Lanka throughout meant that the series warrants a fitting finale. The Lankans in particular have been outstanding, not because they have dominated the tournament but since they have comeback from seemingly impossible situations. Time and again over the past month, there have been occasions when one got the feeling that the Lankans cannot overcome one more hurdle.

Over the top: 2007 scoop still haunting Misbah?

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

At the end of Misbah-ul-Haq’s international career, this may be an absurd trivia question. What’s the similarity between Chetan Sharma and him? And the answer might well be that one moment in their cricketing careers overshadowed everything else they did, no matter how creditable. While the Indian medium pacer never recovered from the last ball six that Javed Miandad hit off his bowling at Sharjah, Misbah too seems to be heading in that unwanted direction. The scoop that landed into the hands of S. Sreesanth during the 2007 T20 World Cup final cost his side the match.

Over the top: Pak must have separate Test & ODI squads

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Following the setback in the one-day series, Pakistan lost out to England in the T20 series as well. Despite Pakistan pulling off a victory in one of the matches, England were clearly the superior side. Pakistan’s failings in both the T20s and ODIs, which was almost the same as the Test side indicate that the Asian side must ponder upon having separate teams, at least for Tests and ODIs. Also, like every other team, they must look out for some big-hitting T20 specialists and bowlers capable of tying down the opposition.

Over the top: Modi’s Pak statement on IPL no revelation

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Former commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Lalit Modi’s explosive claim that that the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI), had a significant part to play in the exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from the multi-million dollar league was least surprising, and neither was the timing of his ‘revelation’. Whether or not there is an element of truth in the former IPL commissioner’s statement is another matter altogether. The fact is that there were always constant doubts over the way the league was being run, and being the leader of the pack, the onus was on Modi to stop any wrongdoing. However, he kept quiet all the while that he was at the helm of affairs. That he has decided to open his big mouth now, when he has been disgraced by the BCCI makes it extremely clear that he is only trying to get back at the cricket board.

Over the top: Technical deficiencies hurting India

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Sunday at Melbourne was yet another failed effort by Team India as Australia easily trounced them in a one-sided game, in the opening ODI match of the Tri-nation series. Some hopes were raised of an Indian revival following the impressive victory in the 2nd T20, which helped them square the two-match series. However, it was back to square one on Sunday. Like it has been throughout the tour, India were impressive in phases but could not capitalise on the advantage and allowed the opposition to get away easily. Vinay Kumar was extremely impressive as India bowled first, being rewarded with the big scalps of David Warner and Ricky Ponting in the process. After that though it was all one-way traffic as India lost the plot post the three-hour rain break. When it came to their batting, there was little to inspire confidence as the Aussie pacers meticulously plotted the downfall of the insipid Indians.

Over the top: Little chance for Amir to return

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

With Pakistan beginning to consolidate themselves as team under the astute Misbah-ul-Haq as leader, there seems to be little chance of the banned trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir returning to their squad once their banned terms come to an end. Of course, Pakistan are struggling to find a suitable replacement for Amir and Asif, with Umar Gul being the only good and experienced fast bowler around. But then five years is a long time and by then, Amir may well be the forgotten talent of Pakistan cricket.
