No, the 3-0 whipping of England will not herald a new era in Pakistan cricket, and neither is it enough to hail Misbah-ul-Haq as a great skipper. Of course, this Pakistan team deserves all the kudos for the manner in which they bamboozled the numero uno side in Test cricket. However, most of all, what this triumph will do is bring in a feel good factor to Pakistan cricket. Prior to this everything that could have gone wrong in Pakistan cricket had gone so.

England’s 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Pakistan in the recently concluded Test series in Dubai proved that they are not worthy number one in Tests and that, like India, they too made it to the top of the table courtesy a flawed schedule. While India played most of the matches at or near home during their reign at the top, similarly, the Englishmen too tasted most of their success in familiar conditions. As soon as they moved out of known territory, they were found out. The way they collapsed against the Pakistani spinners was embarrassing to say the least, and only reiterated the fact that no present team in world cricket is good enough to be the dominant Test side.

Sunday at Melbourne was yet another failed effort by Team India as Australia easily trounced them in a one-sided game, in the opening ODI match of the Tri-nation series. Some hopes were raised of an Indian revival following the impressive victory in the 2nd T20, which helped them square the two-match series. However, it was back to square one on Sunday. Like it has been throughout the tour, India were impressive in phases but could not capitalise on the advantage and allowed the opposition to get away easily. Vinay Kumar was extremely impressive as India bowled first, being rewarded with the big scalps of David Warner and Ricky Ponting in the process. After that though it was all one-way traffic as India lost the plot post the three-hour rain break. When it came to their batting, there was little to inspire confidence as the Aussie pacers meticulously plotted the downfall of the insipid Indians.

The England cricket team made the worst possible start to the new year when they were soundly beaten by Pakistan not once but twice. The results reopened the discussion of whether Andrew Strauss’ team can retain their position at the apex of the ICC Test Ranking.

Cricket is a happening game, and that is what we are witnessing in these times. Quite interestingly, the game has been making some adjustments lately as to who would hold the crown for being best of the best. As this season is coming to a close, we have some surprises to keep everyone glued. Within 12 months of lifting the world cup, India has been whitewashed twice in three of their overseas test undertakings. While its neighbor, Pakistan has been making headlines by winning against every side they have come across this season in tests. Rankings do not always do justice, but need more time for corrections and that is what is needed for India to take a more humble position in ICC Test rankings.

Returning to the ‘Teesra’ question, it seems more of a mental disintegration tactic being tried out by Ajmal and less of a lethal weapon in his armoury. And, anyways, it has been proven over a period of time that mystery balls are overrated. Remember, Saqlain Mushtaq made a big name for himself with his doosra, picking up plenty of wickets initially. However, towards the end of his international career, his inability to strike despite possessing the famed delivery proved to be his undoing.

As the year 2011 draws to an end, Cricketing record books for the calendar year get a respite after summing up all the figures. Pakistan’s bowling arsenal, which constituted the deceptive flight from Mushtaq Ahmad to the great inventor and improviser Saqlain Mushtaq, seems to have found another spin doctor – Saeed Ajmal.

In Test cricket, an opener’s role can often be the defining factor. While the attractive strokes come from the middle-order batsmen, the openers have to deal with the ugly task of seeing off the new ball, and in the process taking the shine off it. Of course, till recently the Aussies did not believe in this policy with the likes of Matthew Hayden and Shane Watson hell bent on attacking the opposition. But, back then too, they had a Justin Langer who was prepared to bide his time even as his teammates went berserk. And, like most things in life, the value of a dogged opener is realized only when a team is struggling for one.

There was nothing surprising about Sri Lanka’s loss to South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion. After all, the Centurion is one of Proteas’ favourite venues, where they have won 13 out of 17 Tests and lost only one. But, the manner of Sri Lanka’s capitulation will definitely worry the team and its fans. Their batsmen could not manage to survive even the duration of one whole day’s play in two innings combined. There are many issues between the Lankan board and the players that have not been sorted out – the pay matter being the most important of them all. Of course such things have become part and parcel of Lankan cricketers’ lives. But, while it would be unfair to put down their pathetic showing in the Centurion Test to the off-field troubles, it certainly cannot be denied that all is not well with Sri Lankan cricket. It was perhaps only a matter of time before these unwanted elements seeped into the players’ performances. The lack of application could have had something to do with the on-going impasse between the players and the board, apart from their obvious shortcomings against the pace-friendly conditions in South Africa.

Okay, so Ravichandran Ashwin could not take India to victory in the Mumbai Test against West Indies, and some did question why he didn’t try hard enough for the second run off the final ball. But, he did little wrong in the series otherwise which India won comfortably. Wickets, runs, man of the match, man of the series, everything came Ashwin’s way in what was a fairy tale debut Test series. It was an adventurous month for the Tamil Nadu spinner in more ways than one. First, he got married midway during the series, joining the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, who also did the same. Next, he hit a century and claimed a five-for in the same Test, again joining a league of extraordinary gentlemen in the process – greats like Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar were the only other Indians to achieve the feat. What more could Ashwin have asked for to kick start his Test career?
