And so, the tri-series Down Under heads into the third final. The closely fought battles between Australia and Sri Lanka throughout meant that the series warrants a fitting finale. The Lankans in particular have been outstanding, not because they have dominated the tournament but since they have comeback from seemingly impossible situations. Time and again over the past month, there have been occasions when one got the feeling that the Lankans cannot overcome one more hurdle.

Even though Bangladesh won’t be among the favourites to win the Asia Cup, which commences from next week, there will be a lot of pressure on them, especially from the home crowd, who will expect their players to come up with some miracles. And Bangladesh themselves have a point to prove. After all, they have been playing one-day cricket for ages, and it has also been over a decade since they were granted Test status.

At the end of Misbah-ul-Haq’s international career, this may be an absurd trivia question. What’s the similarity between Chetan Sharma and him? And the answer might well be that one moment in their cricketing careers overshadowed everything else they did, no matter how creditable. While the Indian medium pacer never recovered from the last ball six that Javed Miandad hit off his bowling at Sharjah, Misbah too seems to be heading in that unwanted direction. The scoop that landed into the hands of S. Sreesanth during the 2007 T20 World Cup final cost his side the match.

Considering his poor form throughout the tri-series, no one would have questioned the decision to drop Australian opener David Warner and get in the fit-again captain Michael Clarke in his place. But, he was retained in the eleven, and the in-form albeit inexperienced Peter Forrest was left out. It was a decision that defied cricketing logic, that of playing your ‘best’ eleven, in other words your most consistent performers. However, in hindsight, one wonders if someone in the Aussie camp had prophetic powers. Warner more than made up for his failures in the earlier games with a display that was worthy of a final.

As India’s squad for the Asia Cup was being announced, there was plenty of speculation over whether the struggling Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag would make the cut. And, while the former has retained his place in the squad, the latter was ‘rested’, in the words of India’s chairman of selectors K. Srikkanth. Plenty of reports erupted following the statement, the latest being Sehwag himself clarifying that he requested to be rested. Whatever be the reason, the break has come at an appropriate time for the Delhi dasher, who must seriously reflect on his future now.

The inaugural Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) ended on Wednesday, with Dhaka Gladiators easily getting the better of Barisal Burners by eight wickets. And while Bangladesh’s best player Shakib Al Hasan deservedly won the man of the series award, it were the Pakistan players who impressed the most, from start to end. Imran Nazir, who could have done so much more for Pakistan as a dangerous opening bat, showed more than just glimpses of his talent in the latter part of the tournament for Dhaka Gladiators. It was his whirlwind knock that set up the chase nicely for Dhaka in the final, as the most impressive team of the BPL steamrolled to an easy eight-wicket win.

The camera angle that captured the helplessness on the faces of Kumar Sangakkara, Lasith Malinga and skipper Mahela Jayawardene almost simultaneously during India’s unbelievable chase against Sri Lanka at Hobart epitomized the story of the match. Sri Lanka, after posting a massive total courtesy tons from Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan, and knowing that India had to chase down the target inside 40 overs, must have believed that they would easily be through to the finals. They had every right to believe so.

Following the setback in the one-day series, Pakistan lost out to England in the T20 series as well. Despite Pakistan pulling off a victory in one of the matches, England were clearly the superior side. Pakistan’s failings in both the T20s and ODIs, which was almost the same as the Test side indicate that the Asian side must ponder upon having separate teams, at least for Tests and ODIs. Also, like every other team, they must look out for some big-hitting T20 specialists and bowlers capable of tying down the opposition.

Australia’s thumping win over India meant that they made it back to the top of the points table, reducing the damage afflicted by the two previous losses. From a purely cricketing perspective though what it has done is set up the tri-series nicely, with all three teams now having a decent chance of making it to the finals of the tournament. Picture this: Australia have gained 14 points from five games, with three wins and two losses; India have achieved 10 from the same number of matches, with two victories, two defeats and the tie against Sri Lanka. Speaking of the Lankans, they have clawed back well into the tournament after a disappointing start. After losing their opening two encounters, they did well to hold India to a tie before going on to overpower the Aussies. Presently, they have managed to garner seven points for more matches, and would be high on confidence going into their next encounter, against the Indians, who themselves would be looking to improve on their shabby showing against the Aussies at the Gabba, Brisbane. In short, neither team can claim to have been the dominant one in the tri-series so far. Australia may be ahead on points for now, but they can’t lay claim to being the best yet.

It takes a lot of character to recover from a pasting of the kind England received in the three-match Test series against Pakistan. And England showed plenty of it en route to winning the first three matches of the one-day series against the same opposition that looked impregnable in the longer format, in the process also clinching the four-match series handsomely. If there was one man who was chiefly responsible for this near unimaginable turnaround, it was English ODI skipper Alastair Cook.
