It has been over a decade since the Taliban were ousted from Afghanistan by US forces. And in this decade, the passion for the game of cricket in the country has grown like never before. Of course, it has helped that the cricket team has been performing exceedingly well, rising up from ICC’s World Division five to qualifying for this year’s T20 World Cup as well as the 50-over World championship in 2015. In a country torn by war and violence, the meteoric rise of Afghan cricket amidst the associate nations of the ICC has been almost fairy-tale like.

It was touted to be the series that would re-launch Pakistan’s efforts to host international cricket again. However, it wasn’t to be as a Dhaka court ordered the series to be postponed by at least four weeks, citing security reasons. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is obviously furious over the development in Bangladesh, since a big setback has been dealt to their hopes, both the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the PCB must share the blame for the series being postponed.

We are now a fortnight into the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League and this is the first edition featuring nine teams. The initial tournaments had eight teams with Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors being added last year. However, the former’s run lasted for as little as one season in the IPL, following legal tussles between the franchise and the IPL governing body. Enough action has been seen thus far in this season of the T20 competition for the pertinent question to be asked – is the management of Kochi missing the IPL or are the fans and the tournament itself missing the Tuskers? Well, the answer is a clear no on both fronts.

Three years, one month and few days after militants attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore, it was confirmed that international cricket will be played in Pakistan again, if only for two days. With Bangladesh agreeing to play a one-day and T20 game in Lahore, Pakistan should rejoice and enjoy the moment.

From time immemorial, the gentleman’s game has been blessed to have batsmen, who have changed the way the game has been played and perceived. From W G Grace to Don Bradman, from Jack Hobbs to Garfield Sobers and from Vivian Richards to Sachin Tendulkar, each player has left an indelible mark on the game, which has only made the sport richer in terms of quality. Also, every one of them has made a contribution in their own unique style, which will be remembered for generations to come. And those who have been lucky to watch greats like Javed Miandad, Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting (the list is endless) bat, must consider themselves lucky indeed.

Zimbabwe returned to the Test folder last year, following the political turmoil in the country that forced the team to stay out of the five-day format since 2006. And while there have been some encouraging signs for fans of Zimbabwe cricket, the most significant one being their win over Bangladesh on their return to the Test arena, the fact of the matter is that they have to start from scratch all over again.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) may have suspended its grants to the USA Cricket Association (USACA), pulling them up for poor governance. Also, there are no two opinions about the fact that the functioning of the cricketing association needs an overhaul, a thoroughly professional one at that, what with Ram Varadarajan, one of the presidential candidates for USACA, taking the association to court. However, there is no denying the fact that if cricket wants to be become a globally popular game in the future, a significant contribution will have to come from the USA.

Kings XI Punjab, led by Adam Gilchrist, are perhaps the weakest team in this edition of the IPL. Sounds ironic, for Gilchrist was once among the leading lights in international cricket. However, the 40-year-old’s batting skills have faced with each edition of the T20 tournament, and it is more with his leadership that Gilchrist will look to inspire.

In their five-year stint with the IPL, Rajasthan Royals have seen as many ups as downs. Beginning season one as the underdogs, they went on to clinch the title under the inspired leadership of Shane Warne who guided a team devoid of super stars, bar Graeme Smith, to glory. Even since, they have struggled to repeat their amazing efforts of season one. There have been flashes of the spectacular in the interim. However, the consistency has been missing altogether. This season, with Warne no longer in the scheme of things for the Royals, they have made a fresh beginning under Rahul Dravid. And they have started off reasonably well, with two wins in their opening two games. The challenge will now be to maintain the momentum.
