If all goes well, cricket could be included among the sports for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. It has been reported that the sport could feature in the Commonwealth Youth Games in St Lucia in 2017, which would pave the way for its inclusion in the 2018 Gold Coast Games. If that happens, the game of cricket will only be benefited for the sport will reach a larger target audience. It was touted to be the series that would re-launch Pakistan’s efforts to host international cricket again. However, it wasn’t to be as a Dhaka court ordered the series to be postponed by at least four weeks, citing security reasons. We are now a fortnight into the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League and this is the first edition featuring nine teams. The initial tournaments had eight teams with Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors being added last year. However, the former’s run lasted for as little as one season in the IPL, following legal tussles between the franchise and the IPL governing body. Enough action has been seen thus far in this season of the T20 competition for the pertinent question to be asked – is the management of Kochi missing the IPL or are the fans and the tournament itself missing the Tuskers? The International Cricket Council‘s (ICC) decision to not hold the Champions Trophy tournament or the mini-World Cup, as it is better known, makes a lot of sense for more reasons than one. Firstly, the concept of holding the tournament in the first place itself was a flawed one. Since a cricket World Cup is anyways held every four years, there was no reason to have a separate tournament featuring all the big teams, every two years.

The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to increase the number of participating nations from 12 to 16 for the 2014 T20 World Cup to be held in Bangladesh is a step in the right direction for sure. While Test cricket remains the purest form of the sport, the practical way to move the game forward is to by enticing smaller nations with interesting challenges. It is a fact that T20 is nowhere near as tough as Tests or even ODIs. However, allowing more teams from among associates and affiliates to take part in the T20 competition is a sure shot way of telling them that they are welcome in international cricket.
