Over the top: Ashwin’s attitude can take him places

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Okay, so Ravichandran Ashwin could not take India to victory in the Mumbai Test against West Indies, and some did question why he didn’t try hard enough for the second run off the final ball. But, he did little wrong in the series otherwise which India won comfortably. Wickets, runs, man of the match, man of the series, everything came Ashwin’s way in what was a fairy tale debut Test series. It was an adventurous month for the Tamil Nadu spinner in more ways than one. First, he got married midway during the series, joining the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, who also did the same. Next, he hit a century and claimed a five-for in the same Test, again joining a league of extraordinary gentlemen in the process – greats like Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar were the only other Indians to achieve the feat. What more could Ashwin have asked for to kick start his Test career?

Over the top: 99, and still waiting…

Friday, November 25th, 2011

He may have been anointed as the God of cricket. But even Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, with 99 international hundreds in a career spanning 22 years and a few days, is feeling the heat of the much-awaited and ‘almost there, but not quite’ 100th international hundred. Fans at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the home ground of the Little Maestro, were desperately awaiting the feat as much as anyone else. In fact, there were even unconfirmed reports of a dead pitch being prepared to assist Tendulkar in his bid to create ‘history’ (sad if this turns out to be true).

Over the top: Test cricket on the edge

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

The empty stands at Eden Gardens in Kolkata — the home of cricket in India — during the second Test between India and West Indies was a blaring example that the five-day format of the game is losing out to ODIs and T20s, and a stark reminder that a lot needs to be done to resurrect the game. Ironically, in the very same week, the International Cricket Council (ICC) came out with its decision to postpone the World Test Championship, which was likely to be held in 2013. The event will now not be held until 2017 owing to the schedule being packed until then, and other sponsorship reasons. Sadly, there is no guarantee that the championship will be held after 2017 as well. In short, Test cricket stands to lose the most and, yet, the sport’s governing body is ready to put at stake the future of the most sacred version of the game.

Over the top: Too much fuss over ‘Sach’ milestones

Friday, November 18th, 2011

“Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar!”

What can one write about the phenomenon that hasn’t been written before? Even the average cricket fan can churn out thesis after thesis on the Little Master. It is least surprising then that there is so much hullabaloo over the 100th international century that has eluded Tendulkar for quite a while now. In the meantime, he also completed 15,000 Test runs recently, another highly celebrated achievement. And one can guarantee there are many more to follow. The list is already quite long – most matches, most runs, most centuries, highest ODI score, and so on…

Over the top: C for cricket, C for corruption

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Thursday, November 3rd, was perhaps the saddest day in cricketing history as the three Pakistani players involved in spot fixing — Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer — were sent behind bars. When an individual decides to take up the sport as a profession, he dreams of making his country proud with his performances. The above mentioned tainted trio would also have had similar ambitions, at least we assume so. But, somewhere down the line their priorities seem to have changed, and it all ended up as one big farce played out in England last year. While the sentences that have been announced may serve as a deterrent to other greedy players, the fight against corruption must go on and the game has to be kept as sacrosanct as possible.

Over the top: Surviving the test of time

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Does Test cricket have a future in today’s times where T20s are being played day in and day out, and crowds are even beginning to desert one-day internationals considering them too lengthy? This query has come to the fore way too often for comfort in recent times especially for connoisseurs of the game. True, the five-day format of the sport is struggling to make its mark more so among the younger generation, who have grown up with life in the fast lane. That said, the survival of Test cricket is a must for it is the truest ‘test’ of any cricketer with no disrespect to ODIs and T20s.

Doosra: India vs England – A contest of two rights

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Less than two months ago, India was humbled, humiliated in the same format of game which they champion. England, a side known for its shortcomings in limited format proved its critics wrong. They whitewashed the newly crowned World Champions and that too in all three established formats. And now, the tables have turned; India has dealt with their English guests in a much crude fashion to finish with 5-0.

Over the top: Pak cricket in a massive fix

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

That Pakistan cricket is no stranger to controversies is a given. Even so, it plunged to a new low as former skipper Salman Butt and fast bowler Mohammad Asif, two of their ‘brightest’ prospects were found guilty of spot-fixing charges. This latest setback will hurt not just Pakistan cricket, but world cricket as a whole. After all, it has just been over a decade since the shameful ‘Cronje gate’ hit the game. Fans and admirers had not even recovered completely from the scandal, and then this transpired. The needle of suspicion is bound to come back into the sport now, and there can be nothing sadder for the ‘gentleman’s game’.

Over the Top: The Wall who cracked the ODI code

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

It is no secret that when Rahul Sharad Dravid embarked on his one day journey, not many cricket pundits believed he could survive the test of time. However, when he walked off the field for the final time in coloured clothing after scoring a typical half-century at Cardiff, his stats read as follows: 10,889 runs from 344 matches inclusive of 12 tons and 83 fifties. For the record, he was the seventh highest ODI scorer at the time of retirement. And for a man who was often ridiculed for his slow batting, he ended up with an impressive strike rate of over 71 and also held the record for the second fastest fifty by an Indian. However, more than numbers, it has been the positive manner in which he went about restructuring his one-day career after a slow start that has ensured him a place among the pantheon of ODI greats.
