Sri Lankan players have been playing without getting their salaries for the last few months because of the poor state of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board.
As much as 5 million dollars are due in terms of Sri Lankan players’ salaries which date back to last year’s World Cup.
The Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) is worried about Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board becoming insolvent.
The ICC stepped in in December and granted an aid of 2 million dollars to Sri Lankan players, however they are still owed a further 2.3 million dollars
Yet Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan skipper is positive about getting paid soon.
"The newly elected committee is trying to sort things out. It eventually will happen. Until then we just need to try and concentrate on cricket, just move on and get on with it," Jayawardene was quoted as saying by the 'Sydney Morning Herald.'
"Financially it is a burden for some of the guys, so we need to make sure they've got that security, knowing that they will get paid, so we can keep their focus on their game," Jayawardene said ahead of the tri-series beginning on Sunday in Melbourne with India taking on Australia in the opener.
Consequently the players are obviously turning towards lucrative Twenty20 tournaments such as IPL, BPL or Big Bash League.
Tim May, the FICA chief executive warned if the situation stays the same, it will be a big setback for Sri Lanka cricket.
