Just nine months after being appointed as captain of Sri Lanka, Tillakaratne Dilshan has stepped down from his captaincy.

Dilshan after succeding Kumar Sangakkar, had a difficult time guiding the team as it lost test series at home to Australia and away to Pakistan, South Africa and England.

His resignation comes a day after Sri Lanka chased down a target of 313 to beat South Africa at the Wanderers with a ball to spare.

The victory however, was of no use as the Proteas had already won the opening three encounters in the five-match affair.

"Dilshan has resigned as captain in all three formats of the game," Sri Lanka Cricket said, "Members of the executive committee take this opportunity to thank Dilshan for his commitment and dedication during his tenure as the national captain. We also wish him well as he continues to represent Sri Lanka as a national player."

Dilshan won just one Test and lost five out of 11 Tests as captain, although he did lead the Sri Lanka to their first win on South African soil when they beat Proteas in Durban.
