New Zealand were left sweating over both their captain and their chances of victory after Ross Taylor's injury was the only significant event of the second day's play in their one-off Test against Zimbabwe.

Less than 16 overs of play were possible before rain set in to wipe out the remainder of the day with New Zealand on 392 for five.

Although they hadn't lost a wicket in the process of adding 61 runs to their overnight total, they lost Ross Taylor to injury after he pulled up during a run.

New Zealand Cricket later confirmed that he had gone for a scan on his right calf.

"Early diagnosis by the New Zealand Cricket medical staff suggests it is a calf strain but a clearer picture of the extent of the injury will be known in the morning once the scan results are available," a statement read.

Taylor retired hurt on 122, but BJ Watling proceeded to his second Test fifty, bringing it up with a boundary off Hamilton Masakadza.

Watling was 52 not out when the rain began to fall, while Doug Bracewell was 11 not out at the stoppage.

Bracewell had made just two when he was given a reprieve by Forster Mutizwa, who put down a straightforward catch.
